OF INTEREST TO WRITERS

The 2009 Obon Festival Haiku Contest - Aug 2

       presents

The 2009 Obon Festival Haiku Contest

   The Spirit of Obon
    deadline: Aug 2

We are currently accepting entries for our haiku
contest on the theme "the Spirit of Obon".  This
contest is open to any SL poet who wishes to
participate.  For the purposes of this contest, we
are accepting any Haiku, Senryu, or Tanka.
Please consult The Haiku Handbook, AHA Poetry
Online, or any reputable sources for definitions
of these forms in English.  Our criteria for judging
will be those poems that best reflect "The Spirit
of Obon."  Season word, aha moment, juxtaposition,
the particular, wabi, and other elements of haiku
will be considered in the judging of entries.  But for
the purposes of this contest, spirit will not take
a backseat to form.  All modern English definitions
of haiku, senryu, and tanka will be considered.

Possible elements to consider when composing a
poem on Obon.  The nature of death in Japanese
culture, the Bon dance, lanterns, feasts for the
dead, ritual and practice, mid/late summer.
Numerous sites on the Internet will give you a
world of information about the Obon Festival, the
Bon dance, and more.

All poems received will be elligible to be included
in our Obon Exhibit, which will be opening during
the festival.  The Festival dates are the 7th, 8th,
and 9th of August.   Activities on these dates are
yet to be determined as to their timing, but will
likely include the Grand Opening of the Shin Tao
Theatre, the Grand Opening of the Obon Exhibit
in the Japan Room of the Library of Haiku, the
announcing of the winners of the Haiku Contest,
Kabuki performances, storytelling, poetry reading,
lanterns, Bon dance, and much more.

Haiga are welcome, in fact completed haiga will
most likely be included in our Obon Exhibit.  Any
haiga submitted as part of the contest will be judged
solely on the merits of the poem, not on the artistic
expression that accompanies it.

All entries should be sent on a notecard, or on a haiga
object with all preferences allowable.  Please send
the haiku to DanteOsaka Deschanel, Pomona Writer,
or Sunnie Beaumont by the deadline.

The contest deadline is August 2nd, at midnight,
to allow us time to prepare entries for judging as well
as to process them for inclusion in our exhibit.

We are looking forward to hearing from many of the
wonderful poets who are a part of the creative
breath of this Second Life.  In the Spirit of Obon, we
smile and eagerly anticipate your entries.

DanteOsaka Deschanel
