William Parsons, the third Earl of Rosse (1800-1867), better known as Lord Rosse, was a very busy man.  He was an aristocratic landlord to thousands of Irish farm tenants, a politician, an engineer, and an astronomer.

Today he's best-known for building the largest telescope of the 19th century - the Leviathan of Parsonstown, and using it to discover what we now call "spiral galaxies."

But who was Lord Rosse and what was his life like?  Attend this talk to find out!

(The talk will be delivered using SL voice. Information on how to configure theVoice Client will be available at the event)

An exhibit with models of the monster 'scopes, including The Leviathan can be seen at

Full fathom five thy father lies;
Of his bones are coral made;
Those are pearls that were his eyes:
Nothing of him that doth fade
But doth suffer a sea-change
Into something rich and strange.

The Caledon Library, Radio Riel and Riel Events cordially invite you to....
The Tempest Ball
on
Saturday, August 16
from
Eight until Ten in the evening, SLT

This gala event will take place at Winterfell Libris ( http://slurl.com/secondlife/Winterfell%20Libris/47/179/29 ). You can also tune in to this event on Radio Riel's main stream at http://music.radioriel.org .

Music at the Ball will be primarily Classical, with some Early, Celtic, Folk and Shakespeare-themed music. We encourage guests to attend the Ball in costume, either in something inspired by the play or in Shakespearian attire. Appropriate costumes would be those of Italian Renaissance nobility, or airy and fantastical spirtis.

From "The Wreck of the Hesperus" & "Die Fliegende Hollander" to Captain Jack Sparrow's face-off with Davy Jones, the lore of the sea is replete with tales of haunted, doomed, or sunken & spectacularly wrecked ships. Come join us for tales of ghostly apparitions amidships, strange voices on the quarterdeck (not belonging to the Captain), and St Elmo's Fire playing about the bowsprit.  All sailors, stowaways, saltwater-soaked soothsayers and shivering spirits are welcome, to tell a tale or merely listen spellbound. Sponsored by the Caledon Library and the Clan of Seafarers and Storytellers.

This Story Session is part of the week of events celebrating the last month of Radio Riel's "Shakespeare Summer", focusing on the Bard's spectacular play, "The Tempest". The week will feature themed music programing on Radio's Riel's main stream at  http://music.radioriel.org.  Join us tonight for the Story Session, and again on Saturday night (8-10 pm slt) for a Grand "Tempest" Ball on the Enchanted Isle of Winterfell Libris.

Listening Party & Book Discussion - The Tempest by William Shakespeare
Sun, August 10, 1pm - 4pm
The Great Lawn of the Whitehorn Library, Caledon VIctoria City
http://slurl.com/secondlife/Caledon%20Victoria%20City/30/180/23

"Full fathom five thy father lies;
Of his bones are coral made;
Those are pearls that were his eyes;
Nothing of him that does fade"

"The Tempest"  gives all the storm warnings for hackneyed predictability, with its motley crew of stock character types and situations: the exiled nobleman, the airy spirit, the twisted brutish villain, the stainless young lovers, a shipwreck and a dessert isle. But in the Bard's hands it suffers a sea change... into something rich and strange. Come and enjoy the company of fellow enthusiasts to hear a recording of the entire play, accompanied by discussion of whatever strikes us as we listen... or join us in spirit by tuning in at http://music.radioriel.org.

 All lovers of Shakespeare's plays, and likewise all brutes, dupes, dukes, vagrant spirits, drunken butlers,  and lovelorn youths are welcome to join us, whether they are familiar with the play or not.

The listening party and book discussion begins the festivities for the third month of Shakespeare Summer, sponsored by the Caledon Library and produced by Radio Riel. The week will feature themed music programing on Radio's Riel's main stream at http://music.radioriel.org and will conclude on Saturday August 16th with a Grand Ball on the enchanted Isle of Winterfell Libris.
