The story of Faust, or Faustus, is an old and much-interpreted tale of a great scholar's downfall. The cause of the tragedy is not love of power or wealth, but Faust's curiosity and desire for knowledge, which he sells his soul to the devil in order to possess.

Charles Gounod's opera of Faust, originally premiered in 1859 (and chosen to open New York City's Metropolitan Opera house in 1883) is based on Gérard de Nerval's 1828 French translation of Goethe's verse play "Faust: Der Tragödie."

Straight from the beginning, the story presents grand sweeping themes: Faust is a story of salvation, knowledge, love, and the eternal war between good and evil. The opera emphasizes the human elements, and Gounod translates these themes into some of the most enduringly popular music of the opera world.

Miss Weston will lecture on the opera, exploring its musical and dramatic structure, illustrating her talk with musical examples.

The talk will be followed by a Grand Opera Masquerade at the Bashful Peacock, just across from the library, with Music by Gabrielle Riel (3-5pm slt), and all are invited to come as their favorite Opera Character.

Radio Riel will play the opera in its entirety during the week preceding the lecture.

About our speaker:
Since her rez date in September of 2007, Miss Leslie Weston has distinguished herself by leading a varied life of annoying meddling, cautious exploration, and the pursuit of sartorial splendor.
She started life in Another Existence as an opera singer, training at Oberlin and The Juilliard School, after which she appeared in small doses at the Metropolitan Opera, the New York Philharmonic, and the New York City Opera, among others.
During that time, an abiding interest in the history of musicians led her to the legendary New York Public Library Music Division where she supported her singing habit with occasional forays into the 19th century.  A native of Chicago, she eventually returned to work with the Theodore Thomas Music Library at the Chicago Symphony Archives, after which she retired from the singing world and eventually found her way to Harvard University where she is employed to make music behave itself bibliographically.
While Miss Weston retains some awareness of this life, she only truly acknowledges it in her stubborn insistence on the merits of Bling.
